kilmeterlease via mileage registration van h4 en TrackJackThe fact that a mileage tracking system can do more than just maintain accurate records for the self-employed, SMEs and fleet managers is demonstrated by the application used by H4 Lease. They use the TrackJack for invoicing one of the most innovative products on the market: mileage leasing.

According to Jeroen Meerman, Commercial Director at H4 Lease, H4 Lease is anything but a traditional leasing company. Although ‘lease’ appears in H4 Lease’s company name, “we’re actually a mobility partner”, he says. “Companies often don’t know what’s possible or what they need. We engage in dialogue and genuinely strive for the best solution. And it might surprise you, but we very often advise reducing the number of cars.”

Mileage-based leasing as the solution of the future

When Jeroen joined H4 Lease a year and a half ago, he was already aware of the need for flexibility in corporate mobility, having gained experience after his studies at a temporary employment agency. These are often organisations with high staff turnover. People come and go and are constantly working at different locations. “Flexibility is the norm here.” But in the leasing world, that was far from the case. “You had to sign contracts for several years, hope you could make a good estimate of mileage, and simply assume that your drivers would stick to it. Otherwise, you’d face a hefty additional tax bill.”

The unique concept of mileage-based leasing emerged from the inflexible existing market and the demand for greater freedom. H4 Lease offers vehicles with a fixed base mileage (which you naturally determine yourself, ed.) and you are then charged per kilometre driven. Don’t drive much? Then you don’t pay much. “Since the pandemic, mileage-based leasing has become the product of choice for almost all business owners. The pandemic has shown us that flexibility is hugely important. In the coming years, the concept of ‘the company car’ will be redefined,” says Jeroen

“Don’t drive much? Then you don’t pay much.”

“We actively assess needs,” Jeroen continues. “We engage with our customers, but not just the fleet manager or senior management. We also talk to the drivers themselves. Some employees might prefer an e-bike, or perhaps to work from home more often. In that case, there’s no need for a full-service lease car on the doorstep. Mileage-based leasing offers the organisation a flexible solution that delivers significant savings.”

Made possible by a mileage tracking system

TrackJack ensures the exact mileage is recorded. A mileage tracking system is installed in the vehicles that only transmits the mileage to H4 Lease. No GPS locations, no journeys, no personal data. Just a registration number and a mileage reading. Fully GDPR-compliant. “And based on the mileage that TrackJack transmits to us via a link, the employer receives the appropriate invoice,” says Jeroen.

“H4 Lease rewards driving fewer kilometres. In doing so, we are responding to a changing world where sustainability and driving behaviour are playing an increasingly important role. For example, we recently had the opportunity to work on a major hydrogen project, partly using TrackJack’s mileage records,” says Jeroen.

The hydrogen project is truly unique. “The project is called H2-drive, and the name alone was reason enough for us to get involved. The municipality of Arnhem offered an incentive package that people could sign up for. We were part of a consortium and are responsible for a total of around 70 incentive packages for hydrogen vehicles. We are incredibly proud of that.”

The leasing company will celebrate its 11th anniversary in September 2021. Erik Geerts, the founder, is still with the company and sees that mileage-based leasing is driving strong growth.

Jeroen: “The lion’s share of what we do is mileage-based leasing. But to offer even greater flexibility, we set up a short-lease and rental division in 2020. This allows us to always deploy a suitable replacement vehicle (at very short notice) or offer a car for a short period. This creates a – there’s that word again – flexible pool that customers can deploy or cancel on a daily basis.

“It’s a really exciting, dynamic market. Many people we meet are thinking about their mobility and the opportunities the current situation offers. And actually, every business owner agrees: signing conventional lease contracts for 4 or 5 years is certainly not the right solution. Nobody knows what the situation will look like in a year (or two).”
